Are Silver Fillings Safe?

Dental amalgam, also known as “silver filling” was once one of the most common materials used to fill cavities, but many dentists now use tooth-colored materials in its place. If you have a silver filling, you may be concerned because it contains mercury. However, the f-d-a says these fillings are safe for adults and children over age 6.  After extensive research, they have not found reason to limit its use. The mercury released from the filling is not enough to create toxic effects to the body. Silver fillings contain a small amount of mercury because it helps make the filling flexible. It also hardens quickly and can withstand the forces of biting and chewing over many years. Removal of silver fillings is not recommended unless it is absolutely necessary. If you are concerned about your filling, discuss your options with your doctor.
